Beautiful skin ultimately comes from a proper diet and staying hydrated, you can check all that information in the nutrition section of my blog. Sometimes though that is not even enough, especially as we age and in these deep freeze winter months.
One of the worst things we can do is saturate our skin (an organ) with toxic chemical to “re-hydrate” it, in the form of generic moisturizers. In fact most times we are actually drying our skin out even more because the majority of moisturizers on the market are alcohol based or have “fragrances” in the them. Not to mention that all those chemicals in the lotion are being absorbed into our skin and seeping into every cell in the body.
If you notice that your skin is incredibly dry and nothing seems to be working, follow these 3 steps and you will notice an improvement immediately. You may also find that your routine will simplify because you are not having to use products as often.
First, make sure you are getting plenty of water to stay hydrated.
We tend to drink less water in the winter because we are not actively sweating and the do not have the constant reminder from the heat. However we need just as much water if not more in the winter months to negate the effects of the dry air. Water can be boring to a lot of people but you can easily make water more exciting my by adding your favorite fruit to it. Adding fruit to your water will also boost your antioxidants levels. Antioxidants are molecules that we create in our bodies but that we also obtain from the foods we eat. They help to prevent the oxidation of our cells, which is basically the aging of them. Coconut water is also another great hydrator, along with caffeine free teas. Did you know that your body can assimilate warm water better then it can hot or cold so always try to drink your water at room temperature or just above.
Second, even though it feels great to take an extra hot shower this time of year, resist the temptation and stick with a warm temperature instead of extra hot. The hot water sucks all the moisture out of your skin and leaves you looking like a prune. Take a warm shower and moisturize immediate after you get out with a high quality body oil or moisturize. Finally, Exfoliate 2 to 3 times a week followed by a body oil to hydrate and calm irritation.
